LOUISVILLE, Ky. 鈥 Two events鈥攁 festive cabaret and a commemoration to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.鈥攚ill be offered in January 2013 by the University of Louisville鈥檚 African American Theatre Program (AATP).
A Jan. 20 Martin Luther King Jr. Cabaret will feature Rhodessa Jones, co-artistic director of San Francisco鈥檚 Cultural Odyssey performance program and founder of the Medea Project. The actress, singer and writer will be joined by Cultural Odyssey co-director Idris Ackamoor, a tap dance and alto sax performer. Other performers will include 鈥淢s. LadiSoulSinger鈥 Erica Denise and her band; spoken word artists Gary Brice and Chanita Taylor; and blues singer 鈥淢a Rainey.鈥
The cabaret will be 7:30 p.m.-10 p.m. at Thrust Theatre, 2314 S. Floyd St. Tickets (which include food, beer and wine) are $40 before Dec. 20, $45 before Jan. 1, and $50 after Jan. 1 and at the door. The cabaret is a fundraiser for the AATP鈥檚 20th anniversary in 2013-14.
A free, public program Jan. 21 will celebrate King鈥檚 work with a performance, music and special recognition for the Lincoln Foundation and its president emeritus, Samuel Robinson. The program begins at 1 p.m. in The Playhouse, Cardinal Boulevard between Second and Third streets.
