Discussions start with mayor’s ‘fireside chat’ Sept. 18

LOUISVILLE, Ky. –  Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer will talk about his community vision as he opens the University of Louisville-Yearlings Club fall discussion series, with other events focusing on the topics of criminal justice and the election’s impact.

The UofL College of Arts and Sciences’ international, diversity and engagement programs office is offering the free, public forums in partnership with the Yearlings at the civic club’s 4309 W. Broadway location. The series seeks to bring faculty members and the public together to share expertise, discuss issues and forge common bonds.

The events run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. monthly on Sundays from September through April.

The fall events are:

Sept. 18 – “A Fireside Chat with Mayor Greg Fischer,” discussion of mayor’s vision for the community, moderated by Nat Irvin, UofL management professor.

Oct. 16 – “Criminal Justice: A Black Lawyer’s Perspective,” panel of attorneys discussing the judicial system and its treatment of black residents in civil and criminal cases.

Nov. 20 – “Impact of the Election on Black America,” panel discussion about the effects of the presidential outcome on issues such as the Supreme Court makeup, voting rights legislation, employment and health care.

Dec. 11 – “Community Holiday Reception,” offering live music and refreshments.

The Yearlings Club Inc. was established in 1951 and its members include representatives from corporate, government and private organizations. The club is devoted to promoting civic responsibility, community service and leadership development.
