Author to discuss reproductive justice

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. 鈥 Civil rights advocate, author and law professor Dorothy Roberts will discuss obstacles to reproductive justice during an April 6 lecture at the University of Louisville.

    聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Roberts鈥 free, public talk is 鈥淜illing the Black Body Redux: Twenty Years of Reproductive Violence and Justice,鈥 referring to developments since her 1997 book 鈥淜illing the Black Body: Race, Reproduction and the Meaning of Liberty.鈥 The lecture will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium with a reception afterward.

    聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Her talk is the annual Minx Auerbach lecture in women鈥檚 and gender studies, sponsored by the women鈥檚 and gender studies department in the College of Arts and Sciences.

    聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Roberts is director of the University of Pennsylvania鈥檚 race, science and society program and serves on Penn鈥檚 law and sociology faculty. She writes and lectures about gender, race and class in legal issues; her scholarship in law and public policy focuses on issues in health, social justice and bioethics, particularly pertaining to women, children and African Americans.

    Her books also include 鈥淔atal Invention: How Science, Politics and Big Business Recreate Race in the 21st Century鈥 and 鈥淪hattered Bonds: The Color of Child Welfare,鈥 and she was a co-editor of six books about topics such as constitutional law and women and the law.

    聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 She earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree from Yale University and a law degree from Harvard Law School. She formerly was a professor at Rutgers and Northwestern universities.
