Ten University of Louisville graduate students developed a plan to enlarge Louisville Metro’s urban tree canopy that not only has received a state award but also has contributed to the city’s efforts to plant and better care for trees.

The world has changed in the few short years that the class of 2012 has been at the University of Louisville, but “you are ready to face this changing world,” President James Ramsey told some 2,000 students who participated in commencement ceremonies May 12 at the KFC Yum! Center.

Former Cardinal Basketball stars Marques Maybin and DeJuan Wheat have taken a few detours on their academic journeys, but both will cross the finish line May 12 when they receive bachelor’s degrees during the University of Louisville’s spring commencement at the KFC Yum! Center.

As the days grow longer and warmer, kids will begin to spend more time outdoors – at the ball fields, chasing butterflies, making sandcastles and hanging out by the pool.

The University of Louisville Board of Trustees approved a $482.6 million general fund budget for 2012-13, up about 2.5 percent from 2011-12, at its May 10 meeting. It reflects a cut in state funding and anticipated increased fixed operating costs.

Some people aspire to make a difference to the world. Some students, like University of Louisville commencement speaker Deep Aggarwal, are already well on their way to doing that.

Tara Schapmire will receive her PhD at the doctoral hooding ceremony Friday afternoon from the Kent School of Social Work. When she takes the stage Saturday morning to address fellow graduates, she will represent the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies as its Guy Stevenson Award winner for excellence in scholarship, leadership and other areas within her discipline.

Eight health sciences students graduating May 12 — four dentists and four physicians — are achieving a milestone that has special meaning because they all came from rural, minority or disadvantaged backgrounds.

University of Louisville officials joined friends and partners from throughout the community Tuesday, May 8, to celebrate five years of teamwork and community improvement through its Signature Partnership initiative.

Each semester, University of Louisville colleges and schools select an outstanding student to represent them during commencement.
