Cards Come Together service opportunities included a community cleanup in Old Louisville, a composting project, a beautification project with New Directions and volunteering at the Americana Community Center’s fall festival. In addition, daily on-campus donation drives benefited Dare to Care, Volunteers of America Shelby Men’s Recovery program, Jefferson County Public School students and Catholic Charities of Louisville.

President Neeli Bendapudi and Athletics Director Vince Tyra kicked off the week of service at the Red Barn during the Wear Red to be Fed cookout. Bendapudi asked the crowd to “…think of Cards Come Together as University of Louisville’s love letter to the city of Louisville.”

To show their passion, participants, including a slew of student-athletes, traveled to Old Louisville to begin the community cleanup by landscaping community green space.

Volunteers also painted faces and pumpkins at the Americana Community Center’s fall festival, painted and landscaped a Germantown house at the New Directions Housing Corporation beautification project and sifted worms in super soil and turned compost using pitchforks and shovels at the community composting project.

Niki King, communications and marketing specialist, participated in the community composting project and said the week of service fostered a sense of pride as part of the UofL family.

“I’m passionate about sustainability, so I was excited to have this opportunity to work on composting as part of Cards Come Together,” said King. “During the composting project, we learned that UofL has the only community compost in Metro Louisville, which made me appreciate just how vital UofL’s leadership is for the region’s sustainability efforts.”

King also pointed out that the service projects offered a rejuvenating change to the normal work day.

“I largely work at a desk all day. It was nice to have a change of pace and work with my hands in the outdoors for a bit,” she said. “It was refreshing.”

Cardinal family encouraged to give back April 13-14 /post/uofltoday/cardinal-family-encouraged-to-give-back-april-13-14/ /post/uofltoday/cardinal-family-encouraged-to-give-back-april-13-14/#respond Mon, 26 Mar 2018 16:47:12 +0000 http://uoflnews.com/?p=41214 UofL employees, students and alumni are invited to participate in the UofL Alumni/Cardinal Day of Service April 13-14.

The Alumni Association and the Office of Community Engagement are working at New Directions Housing Corporation. Volunteers each day will complete minor safety and weatherization repairs on homes owned by the elderly or disabled.

UofL’s Cardinal Day of Service is significant because it demonstrates the commitment the university has in engaging and bettering the community.

“For America’s communities to meet the challenges that confront them, they must take full advantage of all the resources available to them. This means our colleges and universities like UofL who already play a significant role in the economic, social and cultural life of a community must step up and assume even more responsibility by becoming fully engaged in the welfare and vitality of their respective communities,” said Ralph Fitzpatrick, vice president for community engagement.

. The first 50 faculty, staff or students to register will receive a #WeAreUofL t-shirt. Volunteer times are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 13 and 14. Volunteers will learn their assignments in advance. No experience is required and materials will be provided.

Participation is entirely voluntary. This is not a work-related activity under the University’s Workers’ Compensation program.

Nonprofit Fair connects students with opportunities to serve /post/uofltoday/nonprofit-fair-connects-students-with-opportunities-to-serve/ /post/uofltoday/nonprofit-fair-connects-students-with-opportunities-to-serve/#respond Thu, 07 Sep 2017 17:52:38 +0000 http://uoflnews.com/?p=38171 The Red Barn filled with students Wednesday looking to make a difference in their community.

They came to meet representatives from various nonprofits at the , learn about their missions and programs, and inquire about how they could get involved.

The fair, hosted by the ‘s service committee, is in its second year. There were 90 participating nonprofits this year, double the number from last year. Some 300 students checked in last year, and they expected even more this year, said Brooke Moody, a senior communications major who serves on the committee.

Moody helped create the fair and joined three other students in contacting nonprofits all summer long to invite them to attend. They targeted nonprofits in the area who had opportunities for students to volunteer or intern, she said.

“This is a passion project for me,” she said. “I wanted to create an opportunity for the campus community to connect with the wider community and find ways to make a difference.”

Last year, she heard one student connected with a nonprofit at the fair and ended up working there the whole year and it became a big part of her senior year.

The Honors Student Council service committee does one or two service projects a month and has an ongoing relationship with the Family Scholar House.

“I love working with them,” Moody said. “It’s been a huge part of my student experience.”

UofL students turn to community service for ‘Alternative Spring Break’ /post/uofltoday/uofl-students-turn-to-community-service-for-alternative-spring-break/ /post/uofltoday/uofl-students-turn-to-community-service-for-alternative-spring-break/#respond Thu, 06 Apr 2017 19:02:06 +0000 http://uoflnews.com/?p=35766 Post-trip update from Katie Mulligan:

“The Alternative Service Break (ASB) program traveled to Baltimore for six days with a group of 15 passionate undergraduate and graduate students and one staff advisor for Spring Break 2017. They performed over 200 hours of service to the Baltimore community.

UofL students in Baltimore for their Alternative Spring Break trip, 2017.

Half of the group worked with the Living Classrooms Foundation, where they did art projects and played games with children in an after-school program. Kat Gries, one of two undergraduate student leaders for this ASB, used her skills and background as a student in the College of ֱ to plan the lessons and activities. The experience was transformative for undergraduate student Krista Mills, who changed her major from nursing to education when she returned after her service at Living Classrooms helped her realize her true passion was for children.

The other group focused their service on working with three urban farms. In between weeding, planting 2,000 seeds and cutting vines and branches despite brisk winds and snow, UofL students took part in impactful conversations about food sovereignty and the consequences of labeling areas as food deserts.

The rewarding trip transformed the students, making them even more passionate about taking active roles in our community, our country and our world.

Aliyah Gant, an accounting major, said she ‘left this trip with a rejuvenated hope in humanity, new knowledge, new ideas for Louisville service and new connections to like-minded people on campus.’”

Alternative Service Break trips, organized by UofL Student Leadership and Service in the Office of Student Involvement, are designed to facilitate service learning as well as build awareness about community issues. Each trip focuses on a theme or social issue to challenge students to think critically about root causes and the student’s role within the community. Previous ASB trips have been to communities such as Asheville, North Carolina, Washington, D.C., and the Galapagos Islands.

The students are from a variety of different disciplines including education, nursing, criminal justice, biology, engineering, business and psychology.

Janet Cappiello contributed to this story, which has been updated since it was originally posted in March.

UofL students head to Belize for service-oriented spring break trip /post/uofltoday/uofl-students-head-to-belize-for-service-oriented-spring-break-trip/ /post/uofltoday/uofl-students-head-to-belize-for-service-oriented-spring-break-trip/#respond Mon, 13 Mar 2017 17:45:33 +0000 http://uoflnews.com/?p=35736 This year’s spring break will consist of more than just fun in the sun for students in UofL’s International Service Learning Program.

Last week, more than 30 ISLP students departed for a service trip to Belize.

While ISLP has visited several countries throughout the years, Belize is the original and the longest-running service trip. ISLP is an interdisciplinary program includes an intense focus on community service.

“ISLP exposes students to the world by immersing them into the local community through service learning and engaging experiences,” said ISLP program coordinator Nicole Rosskopf, who is also a participant on the trip. “This new perspective gives our students a better understanding of people and cultures around the world.”

While in Belize, 32 students will staff a dental clinic and will teach students in local schools. The students and faculty are from a variety of disciplines including nursing, law, dental, communication and criminal justice. Lesson plans will cover crime prevention, personal safety, dental hygiene, setting and achieving goals and STD and pregnancy prevention.

A few dental students will be working in the school, while the majority will be working in the dental clinic providing services for the community. Non-dental students will also be working in the clinic providing office assistance.

However, the trip won’t be all work. While in Belize, the students will visit the Lamanai Mayan Cultural Site and the Belize Zoo, as well as explore South Water Caye on an island expedition.

The students are blogging about their experiences. .
