Moore middle school students are talking with students from different countries about a shared environmental project. UofL professor Mary Brydon Miller, from the College of 成人直播 and Human Development, is coordinating the global education effort to bring kids together on climate change.

鈥淧art of what we want our children to understand is that climate change is happening everywhere, but it looks different in different parts of the world,鈥 Miller said.

Two of Moore teacher Ben Kolb鈥檚 science classes interacted with students from South Africa for more than an hour via Skype, asking about each other鈥檚 daily lives, the environment in their home countries and their shared project on climate change.

鈥淲e’re doing something called The DOT project and it stands for ‘do one thing,’鈥 said Riley Burton, Moore middle school student. 鈥淪ome of the ideas have been to take shorter showers and don鈥檛 use as much water. Reduce, reuse, and recycle, and use less plastic to help save the animals in the oceans.鈥

Sadie Dickinson, a Marion C. Moore student, was excited when she was able to interact with people from the country where she grew up.

鈥淚t was like a little taste of home, honestly. It’s a way to connect with them in a different way,鈥 said Dickinson.

鈥榃e are partnering with our schools here and in other parts of the world to try to bring the research and educational resources of the university out into the community to work together to address climate change,鈥 said Miller.

UofL hosts middle schoolers for a Day of Science /section/science-and-tech/uofl-hosts-middle-schoolers-for-a-day-of-science/ /section/science-and-tech/uofl-hosts-middle-schoolers-for-a-day-of-science/#respond Tue, 27 Mar 2018 19:20:18 +0000 http://uoflnews.com/?p=41231 Louisville middle school students recently enjoyed a day of science. But instead of sitting in a typical classroom, they spent the day on UofL鈥檚 campus.聽

Seventy students from Marion C. Moore Middle School learned about nature from UofL professors. Their first stop was UofL鈥檚 Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium to watch, 鈥淒ynamic Earth.鈥 Then, they completed various hands-on activities focusing on the environment and climate change. The middle schoolers produced plans to grow food in an urban area, discovered how insects adapt to the environment and built simulated seedlings to see how they migrate.聽

The visit to UofL鈥檚 campus is the first stage of a 5-year international research and educational project. The project鈥檚 goal is to focus on students鈥 knowledge and attitudes toward the environment and climate change. Louisville students will then take what they learn and share it with other middle schoolers across the globe.

Ben Kolb, Moore science teacher, hopes his students use 鈥渨hat they鈥檙e learning in the classroom, connecting it here (at UofL) and then even connecting it to the real world.鈥
