This also marks the third year the Cardinals have been selected as Diversity Champions, a distinction given to institutions scoring in the top tier of all HEED Award winners 鈥 only 15 were named this year.

鈥淯ofL is so pleased by these accomplishments, knowing there is more work to be done 鈥 but let鈥檚 celebrate success steps as we continue to break down barriers where they exist,鈥 said Lee A. Gill, UofL vice president for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. 鈥淭he hard work of so many people across our campuses are leading DEI initiatives, and we thank them for their efforts over the years.鈥

鈥淚鈥檇 like to give special recognition to Faye Jones and her team at HSC for providing innovative health equity programs; Marian Vasser and the entire Cultural and Equity Center for creating a national model for cultural centers; and Diane Whitlock, our division chief of staff for compiling and submitting data to the INSIGHT committee. All have been excellent stewards of UofL鈥檚 journey toward inclusive excellence,鈥 he said.

Among the DEI efforts recognized by the award are:

  • UofL鈥檚 Cultural and Equity Center.
  • Louis D. Brandeis School of Law鈥檚 participation in the Kentucky Legal 成人直播 Opportunity Summer Institute, a program to听prepare students from low-income or historically marginalized backgrounds for the rigors of law school.
  • Workshops led by the Graduate School, including Creating a Harassment-Free Lab; Attracting, Retaining and Supporting International Students; and Inclusive Teaching Strategies.
  • Programs in the College of Business, including the Skills and Professional Development program for minority-owned businesses in collaboration with One West, and the Kentucky Distillers鈥 Association/University of Louisville Scholars Program.
  • The School of Public Health and Information Sciences鈥 series听鈥淐ardinal Conversations: Racism as a Public Health Issue.鈥
  • The Summer Health Professions 成人直播 Program for first- and second-year college students interested in exploring a career in the health professions.
  • UofL鈥檚 new Asian American Pacific Islander Employee Resource Group.

UofL also has earned second-year-in-a-row recognition as a Health Professions HEED Award winner.

The Cardinals have proven leadership as a two-time Diversity Champion, a distinction given to institutions scoring in the top tier of all HEED Award winners. Diversity Champions set the standard for thousands of other campus communities striving for diversity and inclusion.

鈥淲e are honored by this recognition. UofL remains steadfast in our anti-racism commitment to provide education that is fair, just and true, and is inclusive of our multiple identities, but there is still much more work to do,鈥 said V. Faye Jones, interim senior associate vice president for diversity and equity.

As a recipient of the annual HEED Award, UofL will be featured, along with 100 other recipients, in the November 2021 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

鈥淭he HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees 鈥 and best practices for both 鈥 continued leadership support for diversity, and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion,鈥 said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. 鈥淲e take a detailed approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being done every day across their campus.鈥

INSIGHT Into Diversity also recognizes selected institutions 鈥 those that rank in the top tier of HEED Award recipients 鈥 as Diversity Champions. These institutions exemplify an unyielding commitment to diversity and inclusion throughout their campus communities, across academic programs and at the highest administrative levels. Known for visionary leadership, Diversity Champions are institutions that serve as role models and set the standard for thousands of other U.S. college campuses striving for inclusive excellence, according to the publication.

鈥淯ofL is a visionary leader among institutions of higher education striving for inclusive excellence throughout their campus,鈥 said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. 鈥淎s a Diversity Champion school, UofL exceeds everyday expectations by developing successful strategies and programs that serve as models of excellence for other higher education institutions.鈥

As a recipient of the annual HEED Award, UofL will be featured along with 89 other recipients听in the November 2020 HEED Award issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

鈥淲e are honored by this recognition of our commitment to diversity and inclusion, but we need to do more and go beyond this work to move toward an antiracism agenda,鈥 said V. Faye Jones, chief diversity officer and interim senior associate vice president for diversity and equity. 鈥淯ofL has pledged to take a stand against systemic racism. We will use the momentum of this time to actively engage in the ongoing hard work that is necessary to make transformational change in all areas of the institution.鈥

This recognition comes on the heels of several other UofL diversity and inclusion achievements. In July, for example,听UofL was identified as one of only three universities among top universities in the United States that to both Black and Latinx students, according to a new听听report.

And, just last month, the 鈥溾 report issued from the nonprofit听Washington Monthly showed that pursing a criminal justice degree one of the 鈥渕ost enriching educations leading to well-paying jobs.鈥澨

It is the sixth year in a row UofL has received the award.听

UofL is one of 94 institutions receiving the award this year.

The committee from Insight Into Diversity recognized UofL鈥檚 outstanding efforts toward diversity and inclusion, specifically through the Black Male Initiative, LGBTQ work and Kentucky Refugee Program through the law school.

The Black Male Initiative was with an objective of increasing the retention, graduation, engagement and overall success of black males by addressing various scholastic and social challenges. The program includes academic engagement, mentoring, peer connection and student involvement programs. Participants are encouraged to use academic support resources and attend BMI workshops and events.听

For its LGBTQ work, UofL for its support of the community, including as a top college in the nation by Campus Pride Index and LGBTOutfitters. UofL has also pioneered work in educating health professionals to provide quality health care to LGBTQ patients through its . The clinical training manual helps others develop the specific skills needed to provide high quality care to LGBTQ patients.听

The Brandeis School of Law developed the to work with non-profits and stakeholders in the community to advance the human rights of refugees, immigrants and citizens. The HRAP serves as a resource for the community, publishing various materials, hosting events and more.听

Later this month, UofL will also receive a HEED award for the HSC campus.听
