Seven UofL students were named Fulbright scholars for 2024.

The UofL Fulbright winners were awarded grants to teach English abroad in Turkey, Thailand, Moldova, Spain, Jordan, Taiwan and Germany.

The听Fulbright Program, administered by the Department of State鈥檚 Bureau of 成人直播al and Cultural Affairs, is the U.S. government鈥檚 flagship international educational exchange program.

Since 2001, UofL has been a Fulbright powerhouse, producing 175 scholars (the most in Kentucky) and earning national recognition seven times.

  • Medina Aslan听’24, , of Krymsk, Russia, to Turkey.
  • Julia Barclay听’22, ’24, of Union, Ky., to听Thailand.
  • Beverly Granger ’18, ’24, College of Arts and Sciences, of Louisville, Ky., to Moldova.
  • Olivia Hanke ’24,听of Louisville, Ky., to Spain.
  • Anna Hylen’23,听, of Wilmore, Ky., to Jordan.
  • Kaitlyn Purcell ’24, ,of Georgetown, Ky., to Taiwan.
  • Abigail Stanger ’24, College of Arts and Sciences, of Gilbertsville, to Germany.

In addition to the teaching assistantships, sophomores Alexandria Ipock-Groves, College of Arts and Sciences, of Madisonville, Ky., and Saadhavi Maskey, , of Lexington, Ky., were selected as recipients of the . Participants experience an academic program at a United Kingdom university and explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK.

Other prestigious scholars

Three UofL students were awarded . The Boren Awards provide students in all fields of study with funding for immersive study abroad in languages and regions of interest to U.S. national security.

Awardees include the following graduate students:

  • Yelena Bagdasaryan, School of Public Health & Information Sciences, will study Czech in the Czech Republic
  • Alexis Daniel, College of Arts and Sciences, will study Portuguese in Brazil; and
  • Mikaella Tanales, College of Arts and Sciences, will study Mandarin in Taiwan

Four students were awarded the from the U.S. Department of State. The CLS program provides opportunities for overseas language and cultural immersion in critical languages that are essential to the United States鈥 engagement with the world.

CLS recipients are:

  • Kamal Amirneni, senior, College of Arts and Sciences, of Aldie, Va.
  • Ryan Apperson听’24, College of Arts and Sciences and College of Business
  • Laura Hanna, senior, College of Arts and Sciences
  • Rehan Kahloon, senior, College of Arts and Sciences,听of Louisville, Ky.

Other students also earned unique honors and opportunities.

Forest Clevenger ’22,听College of Arts and Sciences,听of Louisville, Ky., was awarded the

Eden Baize, senior, College of Arts and Sciences, was selected as the recipient of the This scholarship promotes the advancement of knowledge in an expanding global community.

Edler Jonhatan, senior, was awarded fellowship, an academic preparation program for undergraduate juniors committed to public service careers.

And, two students received scholarships the university had never been awarded before.

Shraddha Patel听’24, College of Arts and Sciences, was awarded the FAO Schwarz Fellowship. The selective fellowship provides an intensive two-year experience where participants hone their leadership development and professional skills to pursue careers in social impact.

Afi Tagnedji听’23, was selected for the which brings together graduate students from various disciplines across Stanford University.

The grantees named this spring add to an impressive list of winners. With 168 total since 2001, UofL has had more student Fulbrights than all Kentucky public higher education institutions.
The UofL Fulbright winners were awarded grants to teach English abroad in the Slovak Republic, Spain and Jordan and to do research in Germany and the Netherlands.
The听, administered by the Department of State鈥檚 Bureau of 成人直播al and Cultural Affairs, is the U.S. government鈥檚 flagship international educational exchange program.
鈥淭his year鈥檚 scholars have earned opportunities here and abroad that will change their lives and help them make a positive difference,鈥 said Bethany Smith, director of UofL鈥檚 National & International Scholarships office. 鈥淚 am so proud of these talented and hard-working young people, and of the way our campus community comes together to support, challenge and mentor these outstanding students.鈥

English Teaching Assistantships
, UofL 2022 graduate, to the Slovak Republic. He is from Owensboro, Kentucky.
, of Fort Thomas, Kentucky, and , of Covington, both UofL 2023 graduates, to Spain.听
, UofL 2023 graduate, of Louisville, to Jordan, the country from which her family emigrated when she was in sixth grade.听
Research
, UofL 2023 graduate, to the Netherlands to pursue a master鈥檚 degree in conservation and restoration ecology at Radboud University/Nijmegen. Cicha, two-time captain of the Women鈥檚 D1 Rowing team, is from Cherry Hill, New Jersey.听
, UofL 2023 graduate, to Germany to develop a novel blood pump for pediatric and adult patients with heart disease at the Rhine-Westphalia Technical University of Aachen. McLellan is from Lexington, Kentucky.
Other prestigious scholars
UofL chemical engineering major听听won two prestigious scholarships for juniors.听
He was the 2023 Kentucky recipient of the听, the premier graduate scholarship for aspiring public service leaders in the United States. He was also one of听two UofL juniors to be awarded a Barry Goldwater Scholarship听to pursue a research career in natural science, mathematics or engineering. The other听
Goldwater Scholarship winner was School of Nursing student听Madeline Martinez.听
Additionally, two UofL students were the first recipients of awards that debuted for 2023.
Afi Tagnedji, a May 2023 graduate in biochemistry, was one of 25 students in the United States awarded the first听. The fellowship, which focuses on building a network of the next generation of scientists and technologists, was awarded to 100 students total from the United States, Japan, Australia and India. She was the only fellow from a Kentucky university.
, a political science major, was听one of two听Kentucky college students to be named to the inaugural cohort of 100 students who won a听听from the Obama Foundation and Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb.听

UofL students continue to earn prestigious international scholarships /post/uofltoday/uofl-students-continue-to-earn-prestigious-international-scholarships/ Thu, 17 Jun 2021 15:52:50 +0000 http://www.uoflnews.com/?p=53747 Manuela and Noela Botaka, twin sisters born in Kinshasa, Congo, do many things together. They both graduated from the University of Louisville in May 2019 and both were Martin Luther King Scholars. Now, they are the first twins at UofL to each earn Fulbright scholarships.

Manuela鈥檚 Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship is one of nine Fulbright awards won by UofL graduates or graduate students for 2021-22. The 2019 graduate, who has a bachelor of arts in biology, is headed to Belgium, where her sister traveled on a Fulbright research scholarship last year.听The sisters grew up in Lexington.

鈥淚 feel so honored to have the chance to be a part of students’ educational journeys and help them to strengthen their understanding of the English language, which will in no doubt open even more doors for them,鈥 Manuela said. 鈥淚’m also excited to engage with the Belgian community and then learn more about the Belgian Congo, as it relates to my Congolese identity.鈥

Since 2003, UofL has produced 150 Fulbright winners, more than all other Kentucky higher education institutions combined.

In addition, the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, given to one college junior in Kentucky each year, was awarded to UofL student Lexi Raikes in April.

鈥淭he winners of these prestigious scholarships will have opportunities abroad that will change their lives and promote international understanding,鈥 said UofL President Neeli Bendapudi. 鈥淭hese students are the best of the best, and I am awestruck by their hard work and dedication to furthering their education. I also thank our staff members who helped these students win these opportunities.鈥

  • Shakeyrah Elmore, of Columbus, Ohio, who will study postpartum depression in Jamaican women at the University of the West Indies Caribbean Institute for Health Research in Kingston, Jamaica. She is a graduate student in the School of Public Health and Information Sciences.
  • Claire Gothard, of Louisville, who earned a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Morocco.
  • Macey Higdon, of Owensboro, Kentucky, who earned a graduate award to pursue a master’s degree at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland, in biology of physical activity.
  • Kyle Landis, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, who earned a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Madrid, Spain.
  • Rolandson Le, of Louisville, who earned a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Taiwan.
  • Madeline McCloud, of Worthington, Kentucky, who also earned a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Taiwan.
  • Reagan Miller, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, who earned a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Morocco.
  • Hannah White, of Eddyville, Kentucky, who earned a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Galicia, Spain.

Isabella Martin

Isabella Martin鈥擝oren Scholarship. She plans to study Russian in Estonia. Boren Scholarships, sponsored by the National Security 成人直播 Program, provide undergraduate and graduate students up to $25,000 to study abroad in languages and regions of interest to U.S. national security.

Will Randolph鈥擡nglish Speaking Union-Kentucky Branch Scholarship. He will use the award this summer to study modern Scottish at the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland. The English-Speaking Union of the United States is a non-profit, non-political, educational service organization whose mission is to promote scholarship and the advancement of knowledge through the effective use of English in an expanding global community.

Liz Turner鈥擬ary Churchill Humphrey Scholarship. Liz, a May 2021 graduate with bachelor鈥檚 degrees in political science and Spanish, will pursue a master鈥檚 degree at Aga Khan University in London, United Kingdom.

Madeline Martinez鈥擠elta Scholars Program. This program is for students who attend college in the Mississippi Delta region who are interested in community service and social justice. Madeline, a sophomore nursing major, will attend a 10-day summer program at Mississippi State University and a five-day fall program at Harvard University.
