Unfortunately, every drug tested to treat the disease so far has been proven ineffective. The focus now is on prevention with healthy habits and mitigating other health risks.

At this month鈥檚 Beer with a Scientist, Sam Cotton, PhD, program manager of Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program at the and director of the Alzheimer鈥檚 and Related Dementias program, will share the latest updates on what we all can do to prevent development of Alzheimer鈥檚 disease. For those who have developed Alzheimer鈥檚 and their caregivers, Cotton鈥檚 talk also will include how to care compassionately for people who have the disease.

This month鈥檚 Beer with a Scientist event is part of , a citywide event going on Sept. 10-13 highlighting health research for physicians, nurses, researchers and other health care providers and students. In addition, September is Optimal Aging month, with a focus on aging well.

Cotton鈥檚 talk begins at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at , 8023 Catherine Lane. A 30-minute presentation will be followed by an informal Q&A session.

David A. Casey, MD, chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Louisville, will present 鈥淢aintaining Your Brain: Tips on preserving thinking and memory with the aging process.鈥 The event is part of the 鈥淏uilding Hope鈥 public lecture series sponsored by the UofL Depression Center and will be held at 7 p.m. at Second Presbyterian Church, 3701 Old Brownsboro Rd.

Casey will discuss lifestyle changes that can be helpful to maintain brain processes. He also will explain how optimal management of medical conditions can help preserve brain power.

Board-certified in both general psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry, Casey joined the UofL faculty in 1985 and was named chair in 2015. His research interests are focused on Alzheimer鈥檚 disease and other dementias, geriatric depression, psychiatric education and the history of psychiatry. He practices with UofL Physicians-Psychiatry.
