Two UofL dental students completed the American Dental 成人直播 Association Academic Dental Careers Fellowship Program over the 2018-2019 academic year. Sarah Jestel and Stephanie Tan completed the requirements under the mentorship of Dr. Paula Collins and Dr. Gay Baughman.聽

The ADEA ADCFP provides dental students and residents the opportunity to become involved in academia by providing structured mentoring, along with insights into an academic career.聽

Jestel鈥檚 fellowship project was titled 鈥淯sing Aesthetic Case-Based Learning to Help Students Improve Conceptual Knowledge and Clinical Application,鈥 in collaboration with her mentor Dr. Collins. Tan鈥檚 project, 鈥淓xpecting the Unexpected: A Student鈥檚 Guide to Navigating a Rubric,鈥 was completed with her mentor Dr. Baughman.聽

鈥淚 gained insight into and appreciated responsibilities and difficulties dental educators face and developed a meaningful, straight-forward assignment which allowed students to apply didactic concepts to clinical experience,鈥 Jestel said.聽

Jestel also had the opportunity to present her work as a poster presentation at the Annual Session of ADEA this March in Chicago.聽聽

鈥淭his program plants seeds for students about future opportunities in dental education, and allows our faculty to continue their pursuit of academic excellence through research and mentoring. It was involvement with ADEA during dental school that caused me to consider a career in teaching,鈥 said Dr. James L. Harrison, an assistant professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry and ADEA school liaison.聽

Over 300 students have completed the program, representing 30 different U.S. and Canadian dental institutions.聽

The ADEA ADCFP consists of faculty and student pairs who work in collaboration on a research or teaching project. Faculty members mentor students with regard to:聽

  • Understanding the daily experience of a dental school faculty member.
  • Hearing the personal reflections of faculty members via one-on-one interviews.聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽

The ADEA ADCFP is a voluntary program offered by ADEA and managed by individual dental schools. It provides dental students and residents the opportunity to become involved in academia through structured mentoring and insight into an academic career.

鈥淭his program plants seeds for students about future opportunities in dental education, and allows our faculty to continue their pursuit of academic excellence through research and mentoring. It was involvement with ADEA during dental school that caused me to consider a career in teaching,鈥 said James L. Harrison, DMD, assistant professor, Department of General Dentistry and Oral Medicine and the school鈥檚 ADEA liaison.

Under the ADEA ADCFP, faculty-student pairs work in collaboration on a research or teaching project. Faculty members guide students and help them:

  • Understand and experience a day in the life of academia
  • Provide personal reflections via one-on-one conversations
  • Understand and apply best practices in learning and research
  • Plan an academic career and navigate the education landscape

UofL鈥檚 fellows for the next academic year are Sarah Jestel, Zach Fitzsimonds and Stephanie Tan.聽Their mentors include Metz, Paula Collins, DMD, and Gay Baughman, DMD. Faculty Marija Sasek, DMD, and Jolene Zirnheld, DMD, also assist with the program.聽
