
The University of Louisville School of Music is collaborating with Frederick Law Olmsted Academy South, the only all-girls public middle school in Kentucky, to present a musical program titled 鈥淏ecause She Did, I Can鈥 March 23.
The event, which celebrates Women鈥檚 History and month, will feature the Olmsted Academy South鈥檚 string orchestra playing with the UofL Symphony Orchestra.
The groups will perform the premiere of 鈥淩evolt of the Brave鈥 by composer and UofL alumna . The piece was commissioned and funded through , a national organization which strives to introduce students to the experience of creating and performing new music.
鈥淭he purpose of this event is to show young ladies what they can do,鈥 said Kimcherie Lloyd, UofL Director of Orchestral Studies and Co-Director of Opera Theatre.
The 6 p.m. event will also feature student presentations of famous women in history and students鈥 artwork with accompanying string ensemble music.
鈥淲e are so excited to collaborate聽with UofL聽for our third year of 鈥楤ecause She Did, I Can鈥,鈥 said Courtney Schisler, Olmsted Academy South鈥檚 Orchestra teacher and UofL alumna. 鈥淥ur motto is that we are聽brave. This event gives our young ladies the聽opportunity to show how brave they聽are and聽allows聽them聽to聽connect with and learn from brave women of聽the聽past and present.鈥
The event is free and open to the public. Attendees will be directed to programming in Comstock and Bird Recital halls, School of Music, 105 W. Brandeis Ave.
