
Calling 鈥淕ame of Thrones鈥 fans: Linguist David Peterson, who created the Dothraki language for the HBO series, will talk about 鈥淭he Art of Language Invention鈥 April 14 at the University of Louisville.
The author鈥檚 free, public talk will begin at 6 p.m. in Room 110, Davidson Hall, on the Belknap Campus. The comparative humanities department in the College of Arts and Sciences is sponsoring the event.
Peterson has been creating languages since 2009 for 鈥淕ame of Thrones鈥 and other Hollywood productions such as Marvel鈥檚 鈥淒octor Strange,鈥 NBC鈥檚 鈥淓merald City,鈥 the CW鈥檚 鈥淭he 100鈥 and Syfy鈥檚 鈥淒efiance鈥 programs.
His most recent book, 鈥淭he Art of Language Invention: From Horse-Lords to Dark Elves, the Words Behind World-Building,鈥 looks at language creation from J.R.R.Tolkien characters to Star Trek鈥檚 Klingon to Dothraki. He wrote 鈥淟iving Language Dothraki鈥 as a guide to the language he built for the nomadic warriors in the HBO series adaptation of George R.R. Martin鈥檚 works. He also created a language for the Nina Post novel 鈥淭he Zaanics Deceit.鈥
Peterson helped found the Language Creation Society in 2007 after earning a University of California-San Diego master鈥檚 degree in linguistics and University of California-Berkeley undergraduate degrees in linguistics and English.
