LOUISVILLE, Ky. 鈥 The University of Louisville Wind Ensemble will perform April 1 at Stern Auditorium in New York’s Carnegie Hall as part of the New York Band and Orchestra Festival.
The group, which will perform at 8 p.m. under the direction of UofL music professor Frederick Speck, is one of only three U.S. ensembles invited to play in the festival鈥檚 showcase concert.
The New York Band and Orchestra Festival brings together selected high school, college and community instrumental groups in the United States and abroad for music education, performance experience and cultural exchange. Speck also is a faculty member for the festival.
UofL鈥檚 wind ensemble will offer a free, public preview concert March 29 at 3 p.m. in Margaret Comstock Hall at UofL鈥檚 School of Music on Belknap Campus.
Both concerts will include performances of 鈥淕roup Dynamics,鈥 a piece written for the ensemble by past Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition winner Sebastian Currier, 鈥淐ountry Band March鈥 by Charles Ives and 鈥淪ymphonic Dances from West Side Story鈥 by Leonard Bernstein.
In recent years, UofL鈥檚 wind ensemble has established a reputation for performing music of diverse genres. The group played at the 2007 World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles International Conference in Killarney, Ireland.
