    LOUISVILLE, Ky. 鈥 Sports fans and others can join in a discussion of athletic achievement and its benefits and costs during an Oct. 12 University of Louisville event, 鈥淪ports, Risk and the Human Ideal: A Public Forum.鈥

    The free, public event will begin at 6 p.m. downtown at the Muhammad Ali Center, 144 N. Sixth St. Although there is no cost, registration is requested at .

    The speakers will look at the place of sports in life and society, the dangers to body and mind, the human quest for excellence through athletic endeavor and the balance of risk and reward for athletes.

    Panelists will be Darrell Griffith, Louisville businessman and former UofL and National Basketball Association player; Gordon Marino, St. Olaf College philosophy professor, professional boxing trainer and sports journalist; Gwen Bradford, Rice University philosophy professor and 鈥淎chievement鈥 author; Heather Reid, Morningside College philosophy professor and 鈥淭he Philosophical Athlete鈥 author; and Calvin Warren, George Washington University American studies professor and 鈥淥ntological Terror: Blackness, Nihilism and Emancipation鈥 author.

    The program will open with light refreshments in the center鈥檚 LeRoy Neiman Gallery and conclude with a question-and-answer session moderated by Louisville broadcast host John Ramsey.

    UofL鈥檚 philosophy department, Liberal Studies Project and Commonwealth Center for the Humanities and Society, all within the College of Arts and Sciences; Muhammad Ali Center; and the Society for Applied Philosophy are event sponsors.

    Several panelists will participate the next morning in a scholarly workshop on 鈥淪ports, Risk and the Human Ideal.鈥 That 9 a.m.-noon event in W104, Ekstrom Library, will include discussion of academic papers about college football, sports and anti-blackness and a defense of boxing as sport.
