LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Society for Military History is offering Kentuckiana-area residents an economical chance to learn from the pros about war and peace during its April meeting in Louisville.

Residents of the nine-county Kentuckiana region can buy $39 community day passes to sessions April 6-8 when the U.S.-based international group has its 85^th annual meeting at the Galt House Hotel, 140 N. Fourth St. The University of Louisville’s College of Arts and Sciences and its history department are hosts for the conference on the theme “Landscapes of War and Peace.”

The day-pass option illustrates how the academic society is striving for more public engagement as leading scholars share their research into the military history of all periods and places. About 600 participants are expected and more than 90 sessions have been scheduled.

 “We’re trying to connect the conference a bit to the region in which it’s held,” said conference organizer Daniel Krebs, a UofL associate professor of history. “The United States has been at war constantly since 2001, yet the gap between the military and civilian world has only grown. It is vital that we as a society understand warfare, the military and the effects they have on society, culture and politics.”

Offerings include numerous panel discussions, book exhibits, field trips and a Saturday evening keynote talk by Christopher Phillips, University of Cincinnati’s history department chair, about the Ohio Valley’s complex regional history during and after the Civil War.

To register for the day passes, check in advance or register at the door. The Kentuckiana counties are Clark and Floyd in Indiana and Jefferson, Bullitt, Shelby, Henry, Trimble, Oldham and Spencer in Kentucky.

The Society for Military History also is teaming up with the UofL McConnell Center on a Saturday program during which elementary and secondary education teachers can learn new ways to incorporate military history into their coursework.
