LOUISVILLE, Ky. 鈥 The University of Louisville-Yearlings Club fall discussion series will open this month with a conversation with the Passport Health Plan leader and later examine the topics of environmental justice and black male academies.
The UofL College of Arts and Sciences鈥 international, diversity and engagement programs office is offering the free, public forums with the Yearlings at the civic club鈥檚 4309 W. Broadway location. The series, part of the Signature Partnership Initiative, seeks to bring faculty members and the public together to share expertise, discuss issues and forge common bonds.
The events run 4-6 p.m. monthly on Sundays (unless otherwise indicated, as for Sept. 21) from September through April. The fall events are:
Sept. 21 鈥 鈥淎 Community Conversation with Mark Carter, CEO of Passport Health Plan,鈥 with moderator Lauren Heberle, associate professor of sociology. Passport, the nonprofit community-based health plan that administers Kentucky Medicaid benefits, recently announced it would relocate its headquarters to West Broadway and Dixie Highway, which has been heralded as a major economic development boon for West Louisville. (5-7 p.m. Thursday event)
Oct. 15 鈥 鈥淓nough is Enough 鈥 Environmental Justice.鈥 Panelists will discuss health concerns related to Rubbertown industrial facilities and recent residential opposition to a request to modify some of American Synthetic Rubber Co.鈥檚 risk-based environmental goals.
Nov. 12 鈥 鈥淏lack Male Academies 鈥 Are They the Answer?鈥 Panelists will talk about a new Jefferson County Public Schools initiative to establish a middle-school 鈥渕ales of color academy鈥 to address achievement issues for low-income and minority students.
Dec. 10 鈥 Annual holiday reception featuring live music and refreshments.
The Yearlings Club Inc., established in 1951, includes members from corporate, government and private organizations. The club is devoted to promoting civic responsibility, community service and leadership development.
