Blacks who left U.S. for Soviet Union are focus of reading at library

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville Pan-African Studies associate professor Joy Carew will read from her book 鈥淏lacks, Reds, and Russians: Sojourners in Search of the Soviet Promise,鈥 at an event Jan. 22 at UofL鈥檚 Ekstrom Library. The free, public reading will begin at 2 p.m. in the Bingham Poetry Room, on the library鈥檚 first floor.

    Carew鈥檚 book is an account of blacks who left a segregated United States in the 1920s and 1930s in search of more opportunity in the Soviet Union. A number of the emigrants became integrated into Soviet society.

    Also at the event, the library will highlight nine Ann Stewart Anderson paintings of the mythological muses, acquired during a recent renovation of the Bingham Poetry Room. Anderson will be in attendance.

    Ekstrom Library is located on the west side of Belknap Campus next to the Speed Art Museum.
