LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Archaeology experts will discuss Roman garbage systems, a mysterious burial collection and UofL research from the Red Sea basin when they lecture in a free, public series at the University of Louisville this fall.

UofL’s history and anthropology departments and the Archaeological Institute of America’s Kentucky Society are sponsoring the 6 p.m. archaeology talks at UofL’s Portland space and in Ekstrom Library on Belknap Campus. Here is the fall 2019 schedule:

• Sept. 13 — “Making Memories: The Strange Case of the Mycenaean ‘Ossuary’ at Final Neolithic Ksagounaki, Mani, Greece,” UofL Center for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage, 1606 Rowan St. Michael Galaty, University of Michigan anthropology and classical studies professor and director of its Museum of Anthropological Archaeology, will discuss the puzzling origin of a deposit of bones and other artifacts found in 2013 by Diros Project excavators near an ancient cave site in Greece.
• Oct. 3 – “Hominin Dispersal Pathways Out of Africa: A View from the Red Sea Basin,” Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library. UofL assistant anthropology professor Amanuel Beyin will discuss his fieldwork in Red Sea coastal areas of Sudan and Eritrea and recent progress in revealing the Stone Age record of that spot in humans’ evolutionary history.
• Nov. 6 – “Another Man’s Treasure?: The Life and Afterlife of Pompeii’s Waste,” Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library. Allison Emmerson, Tulane University assistant professor of classical studies and the Young Mellon professor of humanities, is a 2019-20 Oliver lecturer for the Archaeological Institute of America. She will draw from her recent excavations through the Pompeii Archaeological Research Project in discussing insights into a community’s economic and social life that scientists can glean from its garbage.
