The effort follows nearly three dozen accidents 鈥渁nd many near misses鈥 last semester involving pedestrians crossing Third and Fourth streets near the Ville Grille, University Park and Cardinal Towne, said ULPD Chief Wayne Hall.
鈥淭hat is a very busy area, and too many people are putting themselves in harm鈥檚 way,鈥 he said.
Officers will cite students for walking against the lights and will be on the lookout for speeders and drivers who run red lights. They also will watch for students who are walking on Third Street rather than taking detours around construction at the Speed Art Museum.
鈥淪tudent safety is our priority,鈥 Hall said. 鈥淯nfortunately, many of our students are simply ignoring the traffic signals. We hope our presence will remind them to pay attention and obey the signals.鈥
