Author Shachar Pinsker, University of Michigan associate professor of Hebrew literature and culture, will give the first Jewish Heritage Fund for Excellence Lecture at 2 p.m., and a 3:30 p.m. reception will feature live music. The downtown events will be at UofL鈥檚 Cressman Center for Visual Arts, 100 E. Main St.

Although the event is free, reservations are requested at or by calling 502-852-6842. Adjacent garage parking is $4 and street parking is available.

Pinsker will talk about how the caf茅 culture of Odessa, Vienna, Tel Aviv and other cities shaped Jewish arts and ideas of the early 20th century. His book 鈥淟iterary Passports: The Making of Modernist Hebrew Fiction in Europe鈥 won a Jordan Schnitzer Award from the Association for Jewish Studies in 2011.
