Movie Nights

Free, public screenings and movie discussions highlight the 2016 French Film Festival at the University of Louisville in February and March.

The festival explores French and French-speaking cultures through a variety of genres, including drama, comedy and psychological thrillers. The films will be shown in Floyd Theater of the Swain Student Activities Center, 2100 S. Floyd St. All are in French, with English subtitles. The 5 p.m. screenings will include post-film discussions with local experts on French-speaking cultures and film studies.

The schedule includes:

-鈥淭imbuktu,鈥 Mauritania鈥檚 first Academy Award entry for best foreign language film, a work about religious fundamentalism and a family鈥檚 fate under West Africa鈥檚 new laws,聽 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Feb. 4 and 2 p.m. Feb. 5

-鈥淏reathe,鈥 a teen psychological drama about a friendship between two girls that turns sinister, 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Feb. 11 and 2 p.m. Feb. 12

-鈥淭om at the Farm,鈥 Xavier Dolan鈥檚 psychological thriller about a man鈥檚 visit to the remote country funeral of his lover, 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Feb. 18 and 2 p.m. Feb. 19

-鈥淧ierrot Le Fou,鈥 Jean-Luc Godard鈥檚 classic film about a couple trying to flee a middle-class life, 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. March 3 and 2 p.m. March 4

-鈥淟ove at First Fight,鈥 a romantic comedy about a small-town man鈥檚 attraction to a beautiful survivalist, 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. March 10 and 2 p.m. March 11.

The festival is presented by the classical and modern languages department鈥檚 French section, Student Activities Board, Commonwealth Center for the Humanities and Society and the Liberal Studies Project.
