Whitesell鈥檚 Sunday gallery talk and reception will begin at 2 p.m. and will include a question-and-answer session. The 鈥淚n Retrospect: John Whitesell Four Decades鈥 exhibit is on display through Feb. 23 in the Schneider Hall galleries on UofL鈥檚 Belknap Campus. Besides Whitesell鈥檚 work, the show includes art by several of his former students and colleagues.
Whitesell is head of the fine arts department鈥檚 printmaking program and is former department chair and Hite Art Institute director. His artwork is represented in more than 25 public collections, including the Library of Congress, and his prints have appeared nationally and internationally in more than 150 exhibitions.
The visual exploration of his career includes traditional screen printmaking, use of computer and digital media, relief and stencil techniques and photography. Many reflect the influence of nature, extending to his early career as a biologist and field naturalist.
Whitesell has received a National Endowment for the Arts grant and an Indiana Artist Fellowship. He received a bachelor鈥檚 degree from Earlham College and a master of fine arts degree from Indiana University, in addition to studying printmaking at Miami University of Ohio.
Regular gallery hours are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.
