The symposium, organized by UofL鈥檚 Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University Club on the Belknap Campus.
The morning speaker will be artist and social activist Mel Chin, interviewed by Miranda Lash, Speed Art Museum鈥檚 new modern and contemporary art curator who recently organized Chin鈥檚 retrospective 鈥淩ematch鈥 exhibit at New Orleans Museum of Art (now at Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis). Chin鈥檚 wide-ranging work in a variety of media explores social justice issues and community connections; for example, his nationwide Operation Paydirt project to publicize lead-contaminated soil problems stemmed from his New Orleans Safehouse work in an evacuated house.聽
Panelists on the expanding role of campus art will be Kathy Barrie, museum consultant and director of Case Western Reserve University鈥檚 Putnam Collection; Marion Wilson, sculptor, associate professor and director of Syracuse University School of 成人直播鈥檚 community initiatives in the visual arts; and Mary Carothers, UofL fine arts associate professor and photographer. 聽
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The afternoon session about Louisville public art will feature William Morrow, independent curator and former 21c Museum director; Theo Edmonds, I.D.E.A.S. 40203 co-founder; Yasmeen Siddiqui, UofL鈥檚 interim galleries director and critical and curatorial studies program director, with Sarah Lindgren, Louisville Commission on Public Art administrator, moderating.
Symposium registration is $25 for the general public and includes breakfast and lunch. Registration is encouraged by Sept. 22 as seating is limited; university students and faculty may attend free if they register by Sept. 22.
