The event, which is held the same night as the spring football game, will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 11, at the Red Barn and is expected to draw hundreds of students, employees and alumni.

Stuart Neff, coordinator for special projects for student involvement, described it as one of the university’s longest running social events.

“The Fryberger Sing and the Homecoming Court Celebration may have seniority, but the Crawfish Boil is not a performance and not a ceremony, but a gathering of the tribes, a spring celebration by the young and the old, students and faculty, strangers and alums. The Boil brings everyone together to celebrate spring and the closing of another academic year,” said Stuart Neff, coordinator for special projects for student involvement.

Crawfish with lemon, polish sausage, potatoes, corn on the cob and onions will be served. Side dishes include red beans and rice.

“There’s nothing quite like a scarlet crawdad, or several hundred pounds of them, to bring people together and keep them talking,” Neff said.

For $5, attendees can eat all the crawfish they want. And there should be plenty to go around – organizers have ordered about 650 pounds of crawfish to feed the hungry crowd.

The Crawfish Boil is sponsored by the Red Barn Alumni Association and Student Activities Board. Proceeds from the event go to Red Barn scholarships and programs through the RBAA.

2014 Writing Symposium to Emphasize Search and Discovery /post/uofltoday/2014-writing-symposium-to-emphasize-search-and-discovery/ /post/uofltoday/2014-writing-symposium-to-emphasize-search-and-discovery/#respond Mon, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://uoflnews.com/2014/03/18/2014-writing-symposium-to-emphasize-search-and-discovery/

“All writers search and discover as they uncover what it is they want to say. In the 2014 Symposium, we want to showcase all of the ways in which students use writing as a tool to search and discover,” said Hollye Wright, assistant director of composition and organizer of the symposium.

The event, held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 26 at the Ekstrom Library Learning Commons, has expanded from previous years and will include poster presentations and oral presentations as well as readings of the students’ creative writings. All types of projects are welcome and instructors are encouraged to design assignments around the requirements of their class.

The event is sponsored by the University of Louisville’s Composition Program and Ekstrom Library Learning Commons.

Annual ‘PINK’ drag show is March 21 /post/uofltoday/annual-2018pink2019-drag-show-is-march-21/ /post/uofltoday/annual-2018pink2019-drag-show-is-march-21/#respond Mon, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://uoflnews.com/2014/03/14/annual-2018pink2019-drag-show-is-march-21/

The annual show is 8 p.m., March 21, in the Swain Student Activities Center Multipurpose Room. A 21-and-over cocktail reception hosted by the LGBT Alumni Group starts at 6:30 p.m. at the University Club. RSVP for the reception.

Hosted by the LGBT Center and its affiliated student groups, the event is UofL’s longest-running, student-organized fundraiser.

PINK 2014 celebrates UofL’s rich culture and continuing support of campus diversity.

“It’s such a good time. It’s an accessible and celebrated part of LGBT culture for people who otherwise might not ever see a drag show,” said Brian Buford, director of the LGBT Center.

PINK began in 1997 to honor the memory of Ken Terrill, an associate professor of theatre arts and a long-time advocate for LGBT students.

Faculty and staff competed again this year in the “Making Change” competition to determine who will win a spot to perform in the show. Brian Buford, Nefertiti Burton, Matt Real, Tierney Bates, Elizabeth Delaney, Sally Evans, Ashleigh Taylor and Danielle Dolan were the contestants and people voted for their favorite by dropping money into their buckets at the Intersection. The winner will be announced prior to PINK and will be a featured performer during the show.

Proceeds from the performance benefit the LGBT Center and help fund the programs, support, advocacy, and education efforts that won the center a five-star rating last year from Campus Pride. The Making Change competition specifically helped fund a Civil Rights Immersion Experience for residents of the Rustin Community earlier this month.

Tickets will be available at the door and are $10 for community members, $7 for faculty and staff with ID and $5 for students with ID.

Advance tickets are available from 11 a.m. -2 p.m. March 19-21, on the second level of the SAC, across from the Multipurpose Room.
